From Lab to Shop Floor: What Really Drives Product Innovation?
In Person Event - Oxford
Lean strategies and culture where scientists, engineers and manufacturing teams work together.
26th June 2026 | Hosted by Element Six at the Global Innovation Centre, Harwell, Oxford
What We’ll Explore
The day will focus on two critical themes shaping the future of manufacturing organisations. There will be a site tour between two workshop sessions.
Workshop 1: Lean Innovation in Practice
How do we create environments where innovation happens faster and more naturally?
Using practical examples and case studies we’ll explore how lean thinking can support innovation through:
Applying TIMWOODS thinking to innovation environments
Reducing delays and data bottlenecks
Improving flow of ideas and feedback
Creating systems that allow teams to test, learn and improve quickly
You’ll see how lean principles can support product development as well as operational excellence.
A Different Kind of Site Tour
Rather than a traditional walkthrough, this event will include an interactive case-study tour of the E6 facility.
You’ll see how lean thinking, operational challenges and innovation intersect in real manufacturing environments.
You'll be part of discussion around:
Process flow
How to navigate between efficiency and effectiveness.
Collaboration between departments
Real examples of improvement challenges
Workshop 2. Navigating Cultural and Generational Challenges
Many manufacturers are facing complex workplace dynamics that affect collaboration and performance.
We’ll explore real challenges such as:
Bridging the gap between shop floor and office teams
Collaboration between PhD scientists and experienced machinists
Generational expectations around flexibility and work culture
Integrating diverse teams including international workforces
Addressing skills shortages while maintaining operational excellence
The core question:
How do we create workplaces built on respect, trust and psychological safety where different perspectives strengthen innovation rather than create friction?
